The 407 goes local

WHEN the Peugeot 407 first appeared on local shores some four years ago, enthusiasts were quite taken up with its pleasing lines.

Where many car designs from the early 2000s would have aged by now, the 407 somewhat still looks fresh and elegant.

Perhaps it has got something to do with the radical oversized oval gaping radiator grille, steeply raked windscreen or curving roof design.

While the car is pleasing externally with its large sharp wraparound headlights for a feline look, the good stuff continues inside with a dark interior for a upmarket feel.

The white-faced instrument panel dials with chrome rings add contrast against the black dashboard to bring out a sense sportiness.

The well contoured leather seats besides giving good support also have a cosy feel.

The best news now is that the 407 is locally assembled at Naza Group's facilities in Gurun, the price tag has dropped to a more comfortable region of RM133,000 from the previous imported version that costs some RM160,000.

Being a locally assembled this time, the 407 seemed to have pick up several goodies that were not found in the imported version.

The 2.0-litre engine gets variable valve timing technology which raises the power and torque levels over the imported version.

During our media test drive from Shah Alam to Damai Laut last month, we found the engine's new found grunt to be enough for stately driving although you still need to do a bit of heavy right footing if you want a fast take off.

Afterall, the 407 tips the scale around 1,500kg. That's close to the weight of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class although the 407 is slightly smaller.

But once you have built up acceleration, the 407 can be a pretty quick car. The four-speed automatic transmission with manual override is smooth.

Expressway cruising reveals a comfortable and planted ride. Fast windy roads can be taken without excessive body roll.

A GPS satellite navigation system on a seven-inch LCD screen adorns the centre dashboard which is easy to use and provides clear road guidance with voice prompting.

With a high trunk, boot space is generous enough for several suitcases and overnight luggage.

Comfort features include dual zone automatic air conditioner and windscreen with metallic oxide layer that reduces the sun's heat. a glove compartment with coolerbox.

For music there is a JBL 240watt HiFi system with 10 speakers and a six-CD changer in the boot,

The 407 with its five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash assessment can be considered a very safe car with its seven airbags easily pushes it to the most highly equipped in its price segment.

Anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, anti-skid regulation and electronic stability programme come standard.

Besides the premium variant, local distributor Nasim Sdn Bhd is also offering the standard variant which is cheaper at RM125,888 but you lose the sat-nav and leather seats.
