Adjust the valves

By CARSIFU | 14 February 2011
Q1: My Iswara Aeroback's engine is still running even after the ignition key is turned off. I can feel the engine is rough during idling and makes a rattling noise whenever I press the accelerator. Does this mean that the valves need to be adjusted?

Excessive valve clearance may be the cause of this rattling noise, hence valve adjustment is recommended to address this problem. You might want to check whether the spark plugs need to be replaced as well, as it is one of the areas that could cause such a problem. On the first problem, the electrical system might be the cause. Have it check by a professional automotive electrician from any authorised Proton service centre.

Q2: My Waja 1.6 manual is seven years old. When the car cold-starts (the car not used for five hours or more or overnight), it emits a very cranky noise (just like a lorry noise). After driving for around 10 minutes, the noise fades away. What is causing the odd noise?

What is the mileage of your car? There is a high possibility that the oil pump is worn out or the tappet clearance is already excessive.  You might want to get them checked or replaced if necessary to avoid further damage.

Q3: I drive a four-year-old Gen-2 but of late, for no apparent reason, I encountered loss of power. The car refuses to move as if the fuel is cut off. I have to stop and turn off the engine and restart before the car regained its power and move on. Is this an electrical or mechanical problem? I had my car scanned by computer for any fault codes but the computer did not detect any problem. What do you think?

The culprit could be the knock sensor. If it is the root cause, replacing it will make the problem go away.
