Unconventional Rozita

At 33 when most models are already making plans for life away from the cameras, Rozita Che Wan is just venturing into the business.

That was four years ago, and now the Alor Star-born mother of two is still a subject of admiration and envy in her circle.

She retains the right curves that are easily some 10 years off her age, and a cherubic face with alluring eyes.

In fact, she was even known as “Miss Mascara” for her eye make-up regime and a janda meletup (hot divorcee) for her physique.

“I wasn’t thinking when I signed up as a talent for commercials four years ago. But now that I am nearing 40. . . oh man. . . an aunty,” she says, letting off a giggle during an interview with Star Motoring.

As long as she can maintain her figure through regular exercise and a non-fatty diet, age will remain just a number for her.

From a relative unknown to a big name in local television dramas, movies and advertising in four short years, Rozita’s rise has been meteoric to say the least.

She is now the brand ambassador for Avon Jewellery and One Drop Perfume, and more recently one of the judges for the just concluded Miss Tourism International 2009 pageant held at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa in Petaling Jaya.

Going further back into her past reveals that Rozita was Miss Malaysia Intercontinental 1992, a title she held briefly but had to give up to became a stewardess for Malaysia Airlines in the same year.

“I was supposed to go to Lagos, Nigeria, for the pageant’s finals but had to forgo the event as I was about to take part in the MAS training programme,” she recalled.

She left the airline in 1994 when she got married.

"I don’t really care about what car a man drives. I look at the person’s character"

Following her divorce in 2003, she was “in-between employment” for a long stretch. At one time, she had worked for an architecture company.

Finally in 2006, Rozita responded to a talent search ad and was selected.

In the ensuing four months, she did more than 60 TV commercials and print ads, and decided to give up office work for life on a much faster lane.

“The pay was better than my salary as an office worker. I never thought of glamour then but just work to pay the bills,” says Rozita, who measures five-feet seven.

By now, Rozita easily has more than 100 TV commercials and prints ads to her name. She has featured in Celcom, AmFinance and Proton commercials.

Her portfolio sampling for TV3 and RTM television dramas includes Sesuci Cinta Sofia, Susuk, Diari Ramadan Raffique, Rahsia Gambar, Tunjang Saedah and Sabrina vs Sazaly, while Rozita’s silver screen outings include Kantoi, Jangan Tegur, Sifu dan Tonga and Misteri Balan Balan to name a few.

She hopes to act in a Bollywood movie some day, as the Bollywood movies usually have good-looking heroes, singling out the hunky heartthrob Arjun Rampal in particular.

For the time being, local TV dramas are her mainstay.

Her hectic schedule means that she had to shoot two dramas side by side on a few occasions.

“Once I got confused and acted my character from one drama for another. Fortunately, the two characters were quite similar.”

In real life, Rozita is a chirpy and chatty person, far from her usually sad and troubled characters.

Now, most of her time is taken up shooting the TV drama Cikgu Kemisah Kirby for RTM2.

She doesn’t get to sleep much, averaging some four hours a night.

So she manages to catch a few catnaps while getting to locations in her BMW 320i Sports E90 driven by her personal assistant, Shahdan, a young man sporting a crewcut who bears a striking resemblance to Tengku Djan Ley Mahaleel, Proton’s head of motorsports.

Rozita gave up driving some three years ago.

“I often get sleepy when I get behind the steering wheel,” she says.

She once took 12 hours to drive from Alor Star to Kuala Lumpur because her eyelids would get heavy and she had to stop at every rest area along the way to freshen up.

“The BMW E90 Sports is sexy enough without being too masculine for women. It’s also a complete car for me and I didn’t have to add extra stuff like alloy wheels or bodykits,” she says.
