Leow stretches out for Hummers

By CARSIFU | 31 March 2012
Datuk Seri Steven Leow wants to be noticed when he rumbles through town. He certainly gets the stares.

The man drives luxury cars or, more strikingly, in three eye-catching black Hummer stretch limousines.

“I hope when young people see my cars, they will think that one day, they can own one, too,” said the son of a former hawker, who is in his late 40s.

For Leow, the founding CEO of the IPC International Group, the desire to own two things he treasures most in life luxury cars and exotic dogs has been his driving force.

“I have always believed that once a person has a clear goal, he will strive for it. That single-minded determination can bring anyone success and greatness,” Leow, a bachelor, told The Star at his office here.

The much-coveted 13m Hummer stretch limousine Leow bought last year is one of just five such Hummers worldwide.

Leow believes he is the only owner of the model in South-East Asia.

His two other Hummers include a more common five-door one and a 9m Hummer stretch limousine, which he believes is the only one in Malaysia.

Although he declined to state the cost of the vehicles, some reports speculated that he may have spent about RM10mil for all three Hummers.

“I usually use them to receive special guests from overseas. When I receive guests, I like to impress them and make them feel appreciated,” he explained.

Both the 9m and 13m Hummer stretch limousines have fully-equipped entertainment centre, multiple TV screens and a mini-bar that can turn the interior into a karaoke room in an instant.

While the 13m model can accommodate about 30 people, Leow prefers his 9m limousine that can take up to 20 people as it is less bumpy on the road.

“When you hit the highway, it is like you're in a private jet,” said Leow.

Leow, who has had pet dogs since he was a child, also has 11 Tibetan Mastiffs, six Siberian Samoyeds, and several Shih Tzus.

His Shih Tzus live in an air-conditioned room on the top floor of his house, but his favourites are his 11 Tibetan Mastiffs, said to be the world's most expensive breed of dogs, each worth easily RM1mil.

Despite his wealth, Leow has not forgotten his humble roots.

During some weekends, he and his six chauffeurs who double as bodyguards would bring old folk and children from homes and orphanages for a joy ride in his Hummers.

“I lost my parents at an early age, so I treat the old folk like my own parents,” Leow said.

To him, his expensive dogs and cars are not just status symbols.

He thinks of them more as his “business gurus”.
