KUALA LUMPUR: The ground-breaking ceremony for Mercedes Benz’s design-and-build completely-knocked-down warehouse in the Pekan Automotive Park yesterday is a strong vote of confidence for the park and East Coast Economic Region (ECER).

ECER Development Council (ECERDC) chief executive officer Datuk Jebasingam Issace John said the council was proud to be part of the development.

“The ECERDC facilitates the allocation of the project area within the park, as well as coordinates with the relevant governmental departments and agencies from the federal and Pahang state governments to ensure the successful implementation of this project,” he said in a statement yesterday.

ECER said that under Malaysia’s National Automotive Policy, the Pekan park was designated as a car production centre and had been identified as an Entry Point Project.

“It currently serves as Asean’s regional base for Volkswagen, Suzuki and Mercedes Benz. The park is now being expanded to cater to existing and new car manufacturers and vendors,” it said.

The park would focus on high value-added manufacturing, with special attention on producing premium and alternative technology vehicles, it said. — Bernama
