MUNICH: BMW has dropped some hints on the next BMW 5 Series. In the latest video released, it shows how advanced technology is helping the new 5 Series owner keep an eye on his car even if he’s miles away.

Part of the BMW Connected ensemble, the “Remote View 3D” feature will let the owner view the car’s surroundings from a smartphone app

In the short clip, a presenter explains what the Remote View 3D app does on the G30 5 Series, which will be the first model to get this feature. He holds up an iPhone showing a bird’s eye view of the 5 Series and the top left corner of the screen suggests the car is a 540i, the successor to the 535i.

BMW isn’t telling yet when the new 5 Series is coming but it could make its world premiere at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in October or the 2017 Detroit auto show in January.

The G30 addresses a key point that the current F10 5 Series is one of the heaviest in its segment. The G10 will be better, being lightened for better ride and performance. An obvious way to shed meaningful weight in the car is to use carbon fibre parts as in the 7 Series.

At the same time, BMW is testing out the G30-based M5, which is expected to roll out by early 2018, round about the same time the Z5 roadster will be introduced.
