Cars that are coming in 2016

By CARSIFU | 30 December 2015

Despite a softening economy projected for 2016, wheels, they say, keep on turning. As we usher in the New Year, CarSifu has compiled a list of cars which should be hitting the streets sometime next year.

TOYOTA HILUX

Update: Available from May 5

The eighth-generation Toyota Hilux pick-up was developed on a “redefining toughness” concept.

In developing the new pick-up, global teams from Toyota drove in conditions ranging from rough, muddy forests to deserts with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius and flooded roads in the rainy season.

The new Hilux is also billed as having ride comfort that makes long, tough drives less grueling, a quiet cabin, and enhanced cruising range thanks to improved fuel efficiency.

It gets an even stronger frame and four powerplant options, including two new high-torque turbo-diesel engines.

These include a 2.8-litre diesel engine, also seen in the latest Fortuner, and 2.4-litre diesel sibling that generates up to 400Nm of torque.

Toyota Fortuner

TOYOTA FORTUNER

Update: Launched locally with Hilux on May 5, 2016 but will be available only in June.

Toyota’s seven-seater SUV will be getting a long awaited update for its Fortuner, which will include the likes of a new six-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift and paddle shifters as well as LEDs for the headlights and daytime running lights,

Other bonuses include a rear-view camera, traction control and hill assist control.

As for engine options, there is going to be a new 2.8-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that will produce 175bhp and 450Nm of torque.

Honda BR-V

HONDA BR-V

Update: This all-new model is out of the running for 2016 entry following a March 10, 2016 announcement by Honda Malaysia.

This three-row crossover for seven passengers was first revealed during the recent Gaikindo Indonesian Auto Show and has been designed for those with an active lifestyle, which means it’ll be getting a tough yet sporty outlook and the ability to fit a large family.

The BR-V is due to go into production by January at the company’s PT Honda Prospect Motor’s Karawang factory and it’ll be outfitted with roof rails and LED lights (front and rear) as standard.

Under the hood, a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine will be sitting 200mm off the ground with 118bhp at 6,600rpm and 145Nm of torque at 4,600rpm, which will be managed by a continuously variable transmission.

The Japanese carmaker says that the BR-V has good straight-line stability, ride comfort, interior head and legroom, rear cargo space and a larger rear door for loading conveniences.

Safety features include two airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, vehicle stability assist, hill start assist and ISOFIX anchorage points, while fitted with 16-inch wheels and 195/60 series tyres.

10th-generation Honda Civic - North America

HONDA CIVIC

Update: Launched locally  on June 9, 2016.

The new 10th-generation Honda Civic will get turbocharged engines, including a 1.5-litre VTEC unit which is part of Honda’s growing Earth Dreams Technology range.

Honda’s 2.0-litre VTEC engine with direct injection and turbocharger technology is already in the latest Civic Type R, producing 310PS and torque of 400Nm.

In North America, the 2016 Civic has the new turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder, direct-injected 1.5-litre engine with variable cam timing (VTC) that produces 174 hp at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 220Nm from 1,800 to 5,500 rpm, mated to a new continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The new Civic has an aggressive new face, highlighted by a chrome-plated Honda “wing” that runs the full width of the front fascia and is flanked by LED headlights.

While the development of the Civic sedan was led by a North American team – a first for Honda and Civic – the overall Civic series involves global design and engineering teams from Japan, Europe, South America and Asia.

Subaru XV facelift

SUBARU XV facelift

Update: Available from January 2016

Subaru is expected to debut a facelifted version of its XV, which means there’ll be some changes in the looks department, such as a new single-slat chrome hexagonal grille, redesigned bumper with daytime running lights, new LED rear lights, L-shaped front headlights and a new steering wheel.

What lies under the hood will be unchanged, which means the 148bhp and 197Nm from a 2.0-litre boxer-four engine will remain and should be mated to a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission once it reaches Malaysia.

Hopefully, the XV will also included an electric driver’s seat as well as keyless entry with push-start button.

Subaru says that the XV’s handling has been retuned to deliver sharper and a more immediate response while the suspension provides less body roll.

Proton Perdana under drapes

PROTON PERDANA
Update: Available from June 14, 2016

Based on the eighth-generation Honda Accord, there’s very little known about the upcoming Proton Perdana flag-ship model that’s about to make its debut during the first quarter of 2016.

It should come equipped with LEDs for the front, rear and daytime running lights, probably with keyless entry and hopefully with a push-start button.

With a total length that’s almost five metres long, the Perdana is 150mm longer than the Accord and should be assembled next to the Exora at the company’s Shah Alam facility.

Lastly, a five-speed automatic transmission should be mated to two four-cylinder options, which are Honda’s 2.0-litre R20A3 with 152bhp and 189Nm of torque, and a 2.4-litre K24Z2 i-VTEC producing 175bhp and 222Nm of torque.

Mercedes-Benz GLC

MERCEDES-BENZ GLC
Update: Available from January 2016

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC-class sport utility vehicle (SUV) boasts a more spacious cabin, efficient powertrains with up to 19% reduction in fuel consumption, and improved performance.

Based on the same platform as the Mercedes-Benz C-class cars, the GLC-class competes against the likes of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

The new GLC has 2.2-litre commonrail turbo diesel and 2.0-litre petrol turbo engines, mated to nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmissions.

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is offering the 2.0-litre petrol GLC 350 e 4Matic plug-in hybrid which combines all-wheel drive with a best-in-class system output of 320hp.

Standard features include the Agility Control suspension and a variable damping system, as well as Dynamic Select handling control system with five driving programmes.

Also standard are driver assistance systems like Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Crosswind Assist, Headlamp Assist and Attention Assist.

Mercedes-Benz CLS 250 Bluetec

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS 250d
This new variant to the CLS 400 is expected to be launched in Malaysia next year and while details remain sketchy, this new offering from the three-pointed star is likely to feature a 2.1-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel.

If so, this engine will output 204PS at 3,800rpm and 500Nm of torque from 1,600 to 1,800rpm mated to a seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.

This car can go from 0-100kph in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 242kph.

Fuel consumption is rated between 4.6 - 4.7 litres per 100km, with carbon dioxide emissions at just 122 grams per kilometre.

Pricing, and we are hazarding a guess here, should be around the RM500,000 range.

Mazda CX-9

MAZDA CX-9
Mazda decided to focus on real-world drivability with its new mid-size crossover, the CX-9 for 2016.

It also boasts a new turbo-charged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, a first in its naturally-aspirated Skyactive range.

It outputs around 320hp and produces 420Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm and works through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Compared with the previous CX-9, the new one is 30mm shorter in length but has a 56mm-longer wheelbase, which increases room in the interior which has three rows of seats.

Access to the third row has been made easier with a single lever to move the second row out of the way.

The passenger side of the 60/40-split second row has also been designed to allow for a child seat to stay attached while still enabling access to the third row.

Jaguar F-Pace

JAGUAR F-PACE

The all-new Jaguar F-Pace is a performance crossover designed and engineered to offer the agility, responsiveness and refinement together with unrivalled dynamics and everyday versatility.

Available in diesel and petrol variants, the top of the range F-Pace is a beast of an all wheel drive with the supercharged 380PS 3.0-litre V6 petrol mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission which runs 0-100kph in 5.5 seconds.

The F-Pace has a slender full-LED headlights, forged 22-inch forged alloy wheels and short front overhang which carries the design vision of the C-X17 concept through to production.

The interior is a perfect blend of premium materials and finishes, exquisite detailing, luxuries such as heated, electrically-reclining rear seats, and cutting-edge technologies including the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and 12.3-inch HD virtual instrument cluster.

Expected to arrive in the last quarter of 2016, it will make its Asian presence in Singapore and Brunei first before reaching Malaysia. CarSifu was in Montenegro in late April 2016 to test-drive the F-PACE.
Second-generation MINI Clubman

MINI CLUBMAN
Update: Available from April 2016

This new MINI has been created with a new interpretation of the tradition-steeped shooting brake concept adapted to the demands of the compact class for the first time – meet the new Clubman.

It’s the biggest MINI has ever made and has gone and done away with the club door on the right, which now sports four regular doors instead due to popular demand, but it still retains two barn doors at the rear.

It has Air Curtain inlets at the front wheel arches that was first seem on the BMW 4-Series and features a stretched silhouette with a shoulder contour that emphasises the car’s width.

Furthermore, the long roofline has a fin antenna equipped with a red status light for the alarm system, a Clubman model inscription and horizontal lights.

The interior has been entirely revised featuring a broad instrument panel with a cockpit facia frame in the upper section along with an instrument cluster on the steering column.

It also gets an integrated circular central instrument cluster with LED lighting and display for the vehicle, infotainment, phone and navigation functions.

MINI said that the six-door wagon offers the highest level of everyday practicality along with long distance suitability, ride comfort and versatility.

The five-seat Clubman will come in three engine variants with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology at market launch.

What’s certain to arrive in Malaysia by April is a four-cylinder 190bhp /300Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine for the Cooper S Clubman, while a JCW-variant waits in the wings.

Rolls-Royce Dawn
ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN

Update: Available from July 19, 2016

The new Dawn is Rolls-Royce’s most powerful full four-seat drophead to date, and thanks to its advanced engineering is lighter and more fuel efficient than the majority of compromised 2+2 convertibles in the market.

At the heart of it is the beloved twin-turbo 6.6-litre V12 powertrain with a power output of 563bhp at 5,250rpm and a torque rating of 780Nm at 1,500rpm.

Driving the Dawn will be nothing less than exceptional.

To the causal observer, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn portrays a striking yet elegant exterior design with classic Rolls-Royce appearance and presence.

It is the most vibrant Rolls-Royce yet with charming and alluring qualities that bring a new level of finesse, sophistication and refinement in a drophead coupé. — Report by JAY WONG, RIZAL JOHAN and THOMAS HUONG
