Continental presents new wheel concept for electric cars

BERLIN: German automotive supplier Continental has come up with an innovative new Optimized Wheel which is designed for state-of-the art electric cars.

The new composite Optimized Wheel comes with corrosion-free aluminium brake discs which provide a larger friction radius and improve braking performance.

The calipers are also smaller and lighter, contributing to lower emissions and a reduction in fine dust particles.

Continental also promises reduced brake pad wear and says the discs should last for the life of the vehicle.

Normal steel brake discs suffer from wear-and-tear and often develop grooves which make it necessary to replace them regularly.

The Continental wheel is an eye-catcher which could enhance the look of many cars as much as a set of alloy wheels.

The Conti wheel is especially suited to electric cars, since these do not rely on regular pedal-operated friction brakes but use engine and recuperative braking.

Since they are used less, the traditional brakes fitted to electric vehicles until now are apt to start rusting, which reduces their efficiency.

Continental has not said when the new wheel could enter production. It will be showcased at the Sept 14-24 Frankfurt IAA Car Show.
