STUTTGART: Borgward has snapped up former MINI design chief Anders Warming (pic).

Warming, a 16-year veteran at the BMW group, left MINI last month and will start his new job from 2017.

The 43-year-old Dane spent the last six years as MINI design chief in Munich. Design will be a cornestone of Borgward products as it sets an ambitious target of producing three new models each year. It aims to sell 1.6 million cars a year by 2025.

To pave the way for Warming's entry, Borgward has specially created a Board of Management position for Design.

“The creation of a separate Board of Management position for Design underscores design’s importance for Borgward,” said Ulrich Walker, Chairman of the Board of Borgward Group AG, in Stuttgart on Friday. “I’m very delighted that we can fill this position with such an extraordinary and experienced designer as Anders Warming.”

Borgward was started in 1890 in Bremen but closed down in 1963 due to financial difficulties. The German brand was revived last year by founder Carl Borgward's grandson, Christian Borgward and a partner, Karlheinz Knöss.

At present, it has the BX5 and BX7 prototype SUVs and a PROJEKT BX6 TS show car to its name. The company receives investment funding from Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton.
