Ferrari goes up in flames

GEORGE TOWN: When a car burns, it’s news. When a super car burns, it’s bigger news.

A Ferrari sports car was destroyed by fire in Jalan Kebun Bunga here on Saturday.

Social media lit up over the combustible incident with photos and video being shared. The black car with Kuala Lumpur-registration number appeared to be a mid-engined F430, a Pininfarina-designed sports car that was produced from 2004 to 2009. It has a 4.3-litre V8 petrol engine yielding 490hp and 465Nm of torque.

The F430 takes 3.9s to sprint from 0 to 100kph and has a top speed of over 315kph. But it wasn't doing any of that in this instance.

As indicated in the video, flames were seen coming out of the engine bay.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a fire engine with seven firemen from Bagan Jermal rushed to the scene after receiving a call.

He said the car, which was parked at the car park in Jalan Kebun Bunga here, was engulfed by flames when the firemen arrived there at about 5.30pm. The flames were put out in about 30 minutes.

“The car owner was not at the scene and the cause of the fire is still being investigated,” the spokesman said.
