LOS ANGELES: Ford's compact SUV for younger drivers has driven into the record books as the first car ever to launch via the Snapchat social network

One day, two automotive world firsts. Hot on the heels of Jaguar reaching for a HTC Vive headset and Virtual Reality to launch a new model, Ford has grabbed its smartphone for what it says is the world's first new car reveal via Snapchat.

And in both cases, the launch medium is completely apt. The new Jaguar concept car is all about the technology and possibilities of tomorrow, whereas Ford's new EcoSport is all about fun, hassle-free driving, individuality and the possibilities for adventure. In other words those that Ford describe as "going small and living big."

"More people are choosing to spend their time and money sharing experiences with friends and family instead of buying more stuff," said Chantel Lenard, ?executive director, Ford US marketing. "EcoSport fits perfectly into this growing lifestyle."

Therefore it shouldn't come as a surprise that the car's connectivity and entertainment capabilities are being singled out. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and fast-charging USB ports in the front. Infotainment is delivered via an integrated 8-inch touchscreen system and there's even the option of a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system with 10 speakers.

What's more, owners will be able to start, lock and locate their EcoSport with nothing more than their smartphones and the FordPass app.

However, the powerplants aren't too shabby either. Initial engines will include a 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost unit and a 2.0-litre engine that comes with all-wheel drive as standard.

Standard equipment on all models will include a six-speed automatic transmission and up to 30 separate storage spaces, hooks and pockets for ultimate practicality.

As for personalisation, there will be a choice of 10 exterior paint finishes, seven ambient interior lighting options and a choice of four different trim levels.
