KUALA LUMPUR: A price tag of RM587,888 has been set for the new locally-assembled Mercedes-Benz S 400 L Hybrid.

It is the first locally assembled luxury hybrid car, and has qualified for full duty exemptions. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia had invested RM15mil for the local assembly operation.

"This marks another great achievement and milestone for us," said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia President and chief executive officer Roland Folger.

"We are proud to be able to contribute in helping Malaysia fulfil its ambition of becoming a regional Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) hub,” added the company's sales and marketing vice president Kai Schlickum.

The S 400 L Hybrid boasts the latest technological innovations from Mercedes-Benz, and was built with three engineering priorities: “Intelligent Drive”, “Efficient Technology” and “Essence of Luxury”.

The new S-Class is the world's first car to dispense entirely with light bulbs in favour of LEDs.

The S 400 L Hybrid has a 3.5-litre V6 engine and 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, and its fuel consumption is rated at 6.3 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

Its power output is 306hp at 6,500rpm and torque is 370Nm at 3,500 to 5,250rpm.

With a combined drive system of combustion engine and electric motor, the S400L Hybrid do the 0 to 100kph sprint in 6.8 seconds; its top speed is 250kph.

Its electric motor is fed by a lithium ion battery and when braking, the battery is charged by a recuperative brake system.
