Honda and Suzuki unveil new bikes

PETALING JAYA: It was a good week for the motorcycling community as Honda and Suzuki unveiled new fuel-injected two-whellers.

On Tuesday, Honda introduced the EX5 Dream FI, which is equipped with the PGM-FI technology.

The air-cooled 109.17cc engine with a compression ratio of 9 to 1 is said to offer better fuel efficiency compared to its now discontinued predecessor.

“The EX5 FI is a considerable upgrade from the EX5 110 launched two years ago.

“It is a product I can recommend with full confidence as the specifications of the FI model is based on customer requirements,” aid Boon Siew Honda Sdn Bhd managing director and CEO Koji Onishi at the event.

According to Onishi, the four-speed bike promises a smooth ride, and is expected to be warmly received by the Malaysian market.

The kickstart version of the EX5 FI goes for RM4,299, while the automatic starter version it at RM4,529, without GST.

Two days later, Suzuki Assemblers Malaysia Sdn Bhd gave the media a preview of its Suzuki Address (yes, you read it correctly!), a continuously variable transmission- based scooter that comes with a spacious 20.6-litre underseat storage, which is an important selling point given more and more riders are opting for full-faced helmets.

The 113cc Address also comes with a rear brake lock mechanism to enhance parking safety, something like a handbrake for two-wheelers.

Other selling points of the very manoeuvrable ride include tubeless tyres mounted on cast aluminium wheels, and a rather large 5.2-litre fuel tank.

According to Suzuki Assemblers managing director Toru Kobayashi, Suzuki was responsible for creating the scooter market for Malaysia when it launched the V100 in 1992.

“In 2012, it launched the 115cc NEX, and this model is now one of the best-selling scooters here,” he said during at he launch at the Shah Alam Kart Circuit.

Retailing at RM4,788 without GST, the Address is the first Suzuki scooter here which adopts an advanced fuel injection system, which could give up to 53kpl, which in this case, could theoretically wring out 276km on a full tank.

The air-cooled engine is compressed at a ratio of 9.4 to one to yield a maximum power of 6.9kW, though no torque figures were supplied.
