TOKYO: The first consumer-focused hydrogen fuel cell powered car capable of covering 750km between refuelling stops went on sale in Japan on Thursday.

As well as an impressive zero-emission range, the Clarity FCV is the first car of its kind that retains the proportions and cabin space of a typical five-seat sedan. That's because Honda has found an ingenious way of packing the hydrogen tank and powertrain without robbing the interior of practicality.

Honda sees the hydrogen fuel cell car as a power source for tomorrow as well as a form of cleaner personal mobility. It believes that the energy stored in its vehicles could be used by owners to power the average Japanese home for up to five days and that is why alongside the car the company will be selling an external power output device - The Power Exporter 9000 - that connects the car to the home for energy transfer.

The Honda Clarity FCV costs ¥7,660,000 (about RM278,000) and the company hopes to sell 200 in its first year. The car will also be going on sale in the US and Europe before the end of 2016.
