KUALA LUMPUR: Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors has begun accepting orders for the new Ioniq Hybrid, which will be launched in Malaysia by the end of the year.

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors managing director Lau Yit Mun said potential customers can visit any authorised Hyundai sales dealers to place their bookings and be among the first for early delivery of the vehicles.

The Ioniq is an eco-friendly car using Hyundai's Blue Drive Technology. It promises fuel-efficiency, advanced technologies, performance, low maintenance and a stylish design.

The Ioniq Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre GDI four-cylinder Kappa engine coupled with a 43hp electric motor, which is fed by a lithium-ion polymer battery to give a combined output of 139hp and 265Nm of torque. It uses a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.



The lithium-ion battery pack is said to be 23-25% more efficient than a conventional nickel-metal- hydride battery. Hyundai claims this provides lower memory sensitivity, excellent charge and discharge efficiency and an outstanding maximum output.

The car's shape is also expected to cut drag. The active aero grille, wheel air curtains, rear spoiler and smooth underbody cover help deliver a 0.24 coefficient of drag, making the hybrid model one of the most aerodynamic vehicles on sale.

The cabin features the use of eco-friendly materials and a clutter-free design and a host of safety features. Among these include a touchscreen audio visual navigator, a reverse camera, vehicle stability and seven air bags that include a knee airbag for the driver.

The Ioniq is built with 53.5% advanced-high- strength steel and lightweight aluminium. With a wheelbase of 2,700mm, the Ioniq is about the size of the Elantra.

The car will be displayed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2016, which is scheduled to be held at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, from Nov 10-13. Hyundai will have a booth there to accept bookings.

The Ioniq price and equipment listing will be announced at launch.
