Latest Tesla Model 3 photo of cabin creates a stir

PETALING JAYA: A photo of the Tesla Model 3 has leaked online, showing the interior of the electric car prototype being driven on a public road in Fremont, California, for the first time.

It's doubtful the spartan dash would look like what is shown in the photo above as Tesla boss Elon Musk had said before that the final interior of the 5-seater would be different from that of the concept.

He had also pointed out that the turn signals and other steering controls would be shaped like a "spaceship" and that he had decided to drop the square-shaped steering wheel as seen in the concept.

The photo released on the Internet was from an Instagram user identified as Richard Hennessy. When we checked his Instagram account today, the photo had been taken down.

Whether the 3 will get a digital meter cluster or be autonomous is still up in the air but it looks like Tesla will put in its trademarked centre infotainment screen albeit in a horizontal format to collate most of the controls in one place for a simple, hi-tech look as befits an electric car. In contrast, the huge screen in the S and X are in portrait orientation.

The US$35,000 3 prototype was unveiled on March 31, and the interest in the car was so high that Tesla received more than 115,000 reservations in the first 24 hours. By May, that figure had soared to 373,000 orders.

The Model 3 is expected to offer at least 346km per charge - for a start. Tesla is always stretching the goal post so the range could be extended by the time customers get their cars towards the end of 2017.

Tesla aims to ramp up total production to 500,000 cars by 2018 with the bulk of orders coming from Model 3 and the rest from S and X.
