Licenceless traffic offenders may pay hefty price

KUALA LUMPUR: Police want traffic offenders caught without licences to be prosecuted in court.

“We do not want to issue compounds to offenders who do not have proper licences anymore. We are proposing that we charge them in court,” said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

Khalid said this was to ensure that road users did not take the matter lightly and were responsible on the road.

“There are many accidents and fatalities caused by those without licences,” he said, adding that action would also be taken against owners who allow others without licences to use their vehicles.

This would include parents who let their children use their vehicles despite not having the licence to drive or ride a motorcycle.

“They need not be arrested on the spot but when we get the directive to charge from the Attorney-General, we will charge them in court,” he said when asked whether offenders caught without licences would be arrested on the spot.
