NIBONG TEBAL: Truck maker Boon Koon Group Bhd plans to launch its own range of superbikes, with commercial production expected to start in the first quarter of 2016.

“We plan to produce 3,000 units for the local and regional market,” group executive chairman Datuk Goh Boon Koon said after the company’s AGM.

He said Boon Koon is partnering a China company for the super bike project. The bikes will be build using German technology.

“The selling price will be around RM40,000 per unit,” Goh said.

He said the company is also planning to launch several models of passenger cars under its own brand.

“We have the licence from the Government to do so. We will develop the models with a China-based company,” he said.

Goh said the company has produced 130 units of the Viflex commercial trucks for the small and medium industries in the country since this January.

“These trucks has a value of about RM5mil. Viflex 2.0 is designed and developed in collaboration with China-based Brilliance Shineray,” he said.

Goh said the company had plans to produce 1,000 commercial trucks under the in-house brand Viflex 2.0 by 2017.

Boon Koon made a loss of RM42,000 on revenue of RM15.9mil in the first quarter ended June 30.

The company’s main commercial vehicles and bodyworks business reported a 19.5% drop in revenue to RM14mil.

The lower sales was attributed to weak demand for rebuilt commercial vehicles as well as bodyworks.

The company attributed the sluggish market conditions to the implementation of the goods and services tax.
