Mercedes-Benz pick-up truck to debut on Oct 25

STUTTGART: The pick-up truck Mercedes-Benz is planning to make has long been known to be real, and no longer just a rumour.

It will finally be revealed in concept form on Oct 25 and is likely to be known as the GLT model. It's about the size of the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan since it's being built on the same platform as the two trucks. The protoype shown here undergoing testing have a similar rear lip spoiler as seen in the Navara.

Mercedes-Benz won't be too adventurous with its truck, as engine options would likely be similar to what the Navara and Alaskan are using to keep costs down. But it will still be a premium vehicle from Mercedes and we can expect some luxurious appointments to make the product stand out from the competition, which will be the Volkswagen Amarok, Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

So engine choices are expected to be a four-cylinder 2.3-litre turbodiesel, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol version, and a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel making up to 258hp and 620Nm of torque.

The Mercedes truck is unlikely to show up in Malaysia as it will be built at Nissan's plant in Argentina and target markets in Latin America, Australia and South Africa. With its brand cachet, the Mercedes pick-up truck is expected to be priced higher than the mainstream trucks in the same segment.

Would you buy a Mercedes-Benz GLT (assuming that's the final name for the truck)?
