KUALA LUMPUR: In a bid to promote road safety awareness for the Malaysian petrochemical logistics community, French tyre-maker Michelin has become the exclusive tyre partner for the Petronas FMDrive 2015 competition.

The competition, now in its fourth year, pits tanker-drivers and their driving skills against each in a series of obstacle courses held at the Shaziman Transport in Durian Tunggal, Malacca recently.

During the event, Michelin showcased its latest X Multi tyre range that the tyre-maker is touting to offer high levels of safety and durability when travelling over different road conditions, while providing less rolling resistance to help improve fuel economy.

The tyre-maker also presented RECAMIC, Michelin’s retread brand that provides re-treading solutions for radial tyres to help transporters reduce operational costs, while maintaining safety and performance.

Other than just showcasing Michelin products during the competition, Michelin Malaysia managing director Beltran Yturriaga said that the competition was in line with the tyre-maker’s goal in strengthening the widespread road safety consciousness in Malaysia.

“We hope this partnership will make a significant contribution to reduce road accidents and fatalities, especially those involving large commercial vehicles, and with its numbers increasing on roads, fleet operators are searching for solutions to improve safety,” he added.

Michelin advocates the importance of tyres being the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road, but acknowledges that the vehicle’s safety and fuel economy is oftentimes overlooked.

“Therefore, the Petronas FMDrive 2015 serves as a platform for us to educate people about the importance of choosing the right tyres, to ensure the highest standards of safety and fuel efficiency in fleet operations,” said Yturriaga.
