SHAH ALAM: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM), the new official distributor of the brand in Malaysia that's managed by Austria-based Porsche Holding Salzburg, has unveiled the new Jetta in three model variants - each with four colour options of Candy White, Platinum Grey, Reflex Silver and Deep Black.

The three variants starts with the entry-level Trendline, mid-range Comfortline before ending with the range-topping Highline, all of which arrives covered by a five-year manufacturer's warranty, five-year roadside assistance and priced with GST without insurance at RM108,990, RM117,990 and RM128,990 respectively.

With a kerb weight of 1,289kg (91kg less) for all three variants, a 55-litre fuel tank feeds the familiar 1.4-litre (1,395cc) turbocharged engine with direct injection - the same one found in the Golf Mk7, producing 150PS from 5,000 to 6,000rpm and 250Nm of torque from 1,500 to 3,000rpm.

But, compared to the previous Jetta, it means there's 5cc-more in displacement, gets 10PS less in power and adds 10Nm more in torque for the same seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission to manage before sending it to the front wheels - allowing it to reach 100kph from standstill in 8.6 seconds (0.3 seconds slower) and onwards to a top speed of 220kph.

In terms of efficiency, the new Jetta is able to achieve 5.0 litres per 100km (1.0-litre improvement), thanks to the inclusion of coasting function, engine start-stop system and regenerative braking.

Externally, the new Jetta's sheet metal is no different than its predecessor in CBU or CKD form, even dimensionally it hasn't changed from the 2,651mm wheelbase to its length, width and height of 4,644mm, 1,778mm and 1,482mm respectively. Including the front (1,535mm) and rear (1,538mm) tracks.

Starting with the entry-level Jetta in Trendline trim, it's list of standard equipment starts with the same halogen headlamps and daytime running lights combination, exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, front and rear parking sensors, twin exhaust pipes and the same set of 16-inch Navarra alloy wheels with 205/55 series tyres. However, the rear license plate lamp now uses LEDs.

Inside, it's Sienna fabric upholstery for the front height-adjustable seats and rear bench with rear air vents, while the gear knob, handbrake lever and speed-sensitive electromechanically-powered steering wheel (now with a flat base) are wrapped in leather.

Although the look and feel inside remains unchanged, the cabin has been fitted with Zebrano inserts - a wood-grain look for a more mature appeal, while entertainment comes from a six-speaker RCD 220 unit with USB, SD card slot and AUX-in.

For safety, six airbags is the standard along with anti-lock braking system with brake assist, electronic stability programme, hill-hold control, brake pad wear indicator and ISOFIX anchor points, while under the 510-litre boot resides a full-sized steel spare wheel.

Moving up to the mid-range Comfortline, the entertainment unit is changed to a five-inch RCD 330G colour touchscreen display with USB, iPod interface, SD card slot, AUX-in, Bluetooth connectivity and MirrorLink for the six-speakers.

Also, there's now dual-zone climate controls, steering wheel controls for the multi-function display, radio and telephone, while the glovebox is not only lockable and illuminated, but cooled as well. Other additional features include dark tail lamps as well as automatic wipers and headlights (with Leaving Home function).

As for the range-topping Highline, the additional kit includes two more speakers for a total of eight-speakers, Black Vienna leather upholstery, cruise control and a 12-way electrically adjustable (with lumbar support) driver's seat.

Lastly, there's also keyless-entry with push-start button, paddles-shifters, Bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and washer system, LED tail lights and a more sportier set of 17-inch Queensland alloy wheels with 225/45 series tyres. Sadly, no reverse camera has been added.

With regards to existing Jetta owners, according to VPCM aftersales director Deenan Nadar, the official word is that the list of electrical equipment is not recommended for purchase as it may not be able to communicate properly with the older Jettas because they could be missing a few components which may cause complications and may cause the vehicle's warranty to be rendered void. However, the wheels are available for purchase enquiries.
