BERLIN: The NIO EP9 electric vehicle (EV) set a new lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, achieving a lap time of 6mins 45.90 seconds.

Priced at USD1.48 million (RM6.66mil), the EP9 comes equipped with 1.0 MegaWatt of power, which is equivalent to 1,360PS - allowing it to accelerate from 0-200kph in 7.1 seconds before reaching a top speed of 313kph.

At present, the EP9 has managed to break or set new track records at four renowned racetracks with its all-wheel-drive system - each wheel with its own electric motor and gearbox.

The US-based comapny has made several announcements over the last few months; one of which was of its plans to produce a second batch of ten EP9s - each of which will be made to order.

The company has also made public that they will have autonomous electric vehicles in the US by 2020 and has also unveiled its automous concept EV - Nio Eve.

Additionally, the company unveiled its ES8 - a full-size seven-seater all electric SUV meant for the China market later this year.

NIO is a global start-up, designing and developing smart, high-performance, premium electric vehicles.

"In the inclement weather that the Nürburgring Nordschleife is known for, the EP9 completed two laps of the 20.8 km (12.9m) ‘Green Hell’, one of which was in 7mins 05.12 seconds, beating the previous EV lap record, making it the fastest electric car in the world.

"The EP9’s new lap record is 19.22 seconds faster than its previous lap time. This is a fabulous achievement for NIO and I am very proud of the team that has worked tirelessly to achieve this accolade,” said NIO head of performance program & FE Team Principal Gerry Hughes.
