Local Nissan distributor Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd said 110,945 cars are being recalled over the airbag issue, while the back door stay problem affects 22,173 cars.
While the airbag defect is well publicised, the back door stay problem is obscure. According to an Edaran Tan Chong Motor statement, the paint coating applied to the back door stay may not comply with design requirements for anti-rust treatment. As a result, the cylinder tube of the door stay may gradually corrode causing the gas in the cylinder to leak out.
Over an extended period of time, the back door stay may weaken thus disabling the hold-up function of the back door. Replacement of defective back door stay will be conducted once improved parts are available in September.
All affected Nissan customers will be notified directly and by letter through Tan Chong Ekspres Auto Servis Centre. Customers receiving this letter are advised to call the nearest outlet for an appointment.
Customers may also call the Nissan Customer Care Centre at the 1800-88-3838 for further clarification or visit Nissan Malaysia site to find out if their vehicle is involved in the recall campaign.
All labour and replacement parts to resolve the issues will be borne by Nissan.
