Panamera Sport Turismo: A most practical Porsche

STUTTGART: Porsche purists probably never expected the sportscar brand to make a genuine estate car, yet the Panamera Sport Turismo is the closest the German firm has ever come to doing just that.

The result is a stylish version of the fastback car with more room inside. The roofline of this shooting brake in all but name has been elongated to provide a tad more space and headroom than the regular Panamera, although the wheelbase remains the same.

The useful extra capacity is accessed via a taller rear hatch, and a three-place back seat is now also on the order sheet, though this is more of a raised cushion than a genuine perch. The seats fold down in a 40/20/40 formation.

The sports tourer gains 20 litres of cargo space over the standard model and 50 litres with all the rear seats folded flat.

The Sport Turismo is all new from the B-pillar backwards only, and the front of car and its range of engines remain familiar.

Top spot goes to the 542-horsepower, V8-powered turbo and other options include a diesel with 420 horses and the E-Hybrid, which has an electric motor to maximise economy.

The green version can manage a claimed 50 kilometres in electric-only mode, but needs more room for the drivetrain so it loses 100 litres of luggage space compared to its combustion-only brethren.

The Sport Tourismos are all nearly as fast as the standard issue - though the extra weight does takes its toll - and they will go on sale from around US$96,000 (RM412,000). The top model costs a lot more, with pricing from US$154,000 (RM660,000).
