LANGKAWI: Perodua is gaining significant ground in its bid to launch its first sedan.

President and chief executive officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the second national carmaker had reached the prototype stage and had even evaluated the platform, engine and transmission for the new model.

He said local engineers and designers would be heavily involved in the project after consultation with its partner Daihatsu Motor Co.

He, however, remained tight-lipped when asked on the launching date.

“We have tested the prototype. It is going to be a good car, I have to admit. It will be a dream come true for us, as locals would be heavily involved in this (project),” he said at a press conference.

The media members had earlier taken part in a three-day Media Icon Drive 2015 held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the MyVi launch.

Aminar said Perodua was targeting a five-star NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) safety rating with the sedan, adding that it was still working on the costing before determining the price.

Aminar also said it would be more aggressive with exports from 2017 onwards.
