PETALING JAYA: Perodua says it has been above-board when submitting cars for safety testing by Asean NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme).

Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said in a statement today that all its vehicles followed safety requirements and conformed to safety ratings awarded by Asean NCAP.

"Perodua does not compromise on the safety and the well-being of our customers and their loved ones."

The latest Myvi has received a 4-star rating from Asean NCAP.

Asean NCAP has assessed the Alza, Myvi and the Axia.

Aminar's announcement came a day after Asean NCAP said it was demanding an explanation from a local car maker to explain a disparity in safety features of a model sent for testing and units sold in the market. It did not name the car maker.

Asean NCAP's move came following a consumer complaint against the car maker, alleging that a top ISOFIX point for a child seat in the rear had been removed. The car submitted for testing had the top ISOFIX tethering point.

Asean NCAP secretary-general Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said: "This is an irresponsible act by the manufacturer and needs to be made public in order to demonstrate (cheating on) safety will not be tolerated.  The results from Asean NCAP rating is a 'promise' between manufacturers and NCAP, especially on the safety fitment installed inside their respective vehicles, and certainly this manufacturer has broken its promise."

Asean NCAP told the car maker that a remedy would be either a lower specification variant of the model be re-tested or to suspend the total rating. The overall finding would be made public, said  Khairil.

Asean NCAP said it is also reviewing all other models from the car maker that had already been assessed.
