PARIS: Peugeot may be in the doghouse where European sales are concerend, but it's all the more reason to step up the innovations.

This is the 2008, a new global crossover Peugeot says is its first that was designed and developed at the same time by several international markets.

It is set to make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

"In the 2008, the marque has the vehicle that will secure its leadership in the segment in Europe and which will win new customers in Asia and Latin America," said Peugeot director-general Maxime Picat.

At 4.16 metres long, the B-segment model combines the driving characteristics of a hatchback with the strengths of an SUV giving space, modularity and comfort.

The 2008 will be produced close to its markets, in France (Mulhouse), in China (Wuhan) and in Brazil (Porto Real).

The front face adopts the latest Peugeot style codes, with a ‘floating grille’ face and headlamps that copies what other car makers are doing these days through the use of LED daytime running lights.

With its higher driving position and pronounced wheel arches, the 208-based 2008 certainly looks appealing.

The black bumpers and body sills are made to protect it from abrasions with the addition of front and rear body protection and side mouldings in stainless steel.

The boot volume, with a low loading sill, has above it a roofline with curves, derived from the double-bubble roofline of the RCZ sports car.

The rear lights appear to be floating inside their housing and the three luminous claws are lit at their base by LEDs that appear suspended.

According to Peugeot, the engines are frugal and emissions start from a lowly 99g/km.

Available engines are a new 3-cylinder 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine as well as 1.4- and 1.6-litre e-HDI diesel lumps.
