KUALA LUMPUR: The development of Proton's electric car was still in the prototype stage and required several validation tests, the Dewan Rakyat was told here today.

Deputy Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the prototype was currently undergoing several intensive tests to ensure quality and safety features.

"The vehicle's performance also met international standards.

"The tests also took into account the needs of customers and the electric car can be produced at a reasonable price," he said in reply to Dr Che Rosli Che Mat (PAS-Hulu Langat) who asked about the electric car's progress.

Mahdzir said Proton faced challenges that were usually experienced by original equipment manufacturers in developing new technology such as     high-investment costs and longer research duration.

"The government fully supports the national car company's efforts to develop an electric car and so the close collaboration between government, manufacturers, utility suppliers and other stakeholders is needed to promote the usage of electric cars thus making Malaysia an electric car production hub in Asean," he said.
