TOYOTA CITY:  Toyota has completely redesigned the Hilux pickup, which was unveiled in Bangkok on Thursday, marking the start of sales of the new model in Thailand.

The eighth-generation Hilux pioneers a "new era" of easy-to-drive, stress-free toughness, while still providing the ruggedness, performance, responsiveness and safety expected from the model.

Available in Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab configurations, the tough yet refined Hilux appearance is achieved by contrasting the front panel with its sturdy bumper section and the integrated look of the slender upper grille and LED headlamps. Body side wheel flares are integrated with the overall body.

The stylish instrument panel features a unified design aesthetic and use of metallic decoration.
Premium features include audio system with electrostatic multi-touch control panel, 4WD changeover switch and luxury seats.

The new Hilux has a newly developed frame and suspension, promising  improved comfort, ruggedness and safety due to an enlarged side rail cross-section.

Off-road performance and comfort are enhanced as a result of upgraded leaf spring suspension and shock absorbers.

The Hilux is sold in three types of suspension specification to suit driving conditions around the world: Standard (suited to all road conditions); Heavy duty (for heavy loads); and Comfort (the specification for Thailand; mainly for driving on paved roads).

In Thailand as well as Australia, the Hilux now gets a 2.4-litre engine that replaces a 2.5-litre, and a 2.8-litre which takes over from the 3.0-litre of the previous generation. Transmissions are also new, with the new Hilux getting a six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual that has a feature that removes shift shock.

Toyota said the truck offers excellent torque in all rev ranges, with significantly improved torque at low speed thanks to the newly developed diesel engines. The six-speed automatic transmission now has more steps and optimised gear ratios to maximise engine performance for balanced torque and fuel efficiency.

Since the Hilux first hit dealerships in 1968, over 16 million have been sold in more than 180 countries and regions.

"Our entire development concept was centered on 'redefining toughness'," said Hilux chief engineer Hiroki Nakajima, who is also a Toyota managing officer.

"We aimed to make the new Hilux 'tougher' based on a much broader interpretation of that word. The message we want to deliver to our customers is embodied in our slogan for the vehicle: 'A New Era for Pickup. Every Inch a Hilux.'"
