PETALING JAYA: South Korea-based Sebang Global Battery Co Ltd is making a comeback to the local automotive and industrial battery scene after a two-year hiatus.

The battery maker, which ranked first in Korea and fifth in the world, will be marketing its automotive and industrial batteries to Malaysian consumers through its local joint-venture company Sebang Global (M) Sdn Bhd. Among its automotive sealed maintenance-free batteries brands are the premium Rocket and the affordable Quick Start series.

Sebang Global Battery’s Asia-Pacific export manager Sam Kim said the company’s range of automotive battery would be compatible with vehicle models running on Malaysia roads.

“Sebang Global Battery’s batteries are well-known for their quality and are the most popular in Korea,” he said at the launch of Sebang Global Battery’s Malaysian operations in Tiong Nam Industrial Park, Petaling Jaya on Thursday.

He said duties for imported batteries which had dropped to 5% from 20% had made it feasible for Sebang Global to re-enter the Malaysia market. The company’s factory at Gwangju, South Korea, boasts the largest production capacity of any single facility in the world, producing over 17 million units of automotive batteries annually.

The company also makes automotive batteries on an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) basis for Hyundai, Kia, BMW and Volkswagen to name a few.

In addition to automotive batteries, Sebang Global Battery will also be selling batteries for golf carts, generators, uninterrupted power supply units and electric forklifts in Malaysia.

The company will also offer its Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)-type batteries, which are more robust and recommended for use in cars with idle start/stop system. The AGM-type batteries costs 20% to 30% more than conventional automobile batteries.

Sebang Global Malaysia head of sales Stanley Yin said prices of Quick Start and Rocket batteries range from RM200 to RM1,800 depending on the type and size.
