Second-gen MINI Countryman gets JCW treatment

LOS ANGELES: John Cooper Works (JCW), the tuning house for all things..."MINI", has gotten its hands on the latest second-generation Countryman compact SUV and has pepped it up to punch out 228hp for its ALL4 all-wheel drive system.

The latest addition to the MINI line-up in the United States can now sprint from 0-100kph in about 6.0 seconds  with a 6-speed manual or optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission with paddle-shifters - making it 0.8 to 0.9 seconds quicker than the standard Cooper S Countryman ALL4.

Under the hood, the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from BMW now plays to the tune of 228hp from 5,000 to 6,000rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1,450 to 4,500rpm.

The performance is partially thanks to an increase in charge-pressure up to 2.2 bar, allowing the compact SUV with 1,657kg of kerb heft (1,639kg M/T) to reach a top speed of 233kph.

In JCW trim, it rolls on 18-inch light alloy wheels with 225/50 series run-flat tyres that partially obscure the Brembo sports braking system and hides the new sports suspension system.

There's also another set of 18-inch wheels available as an optional extra as well as a larger set of 19-inch wheels fitted with lower profile 225/45 series run-flat tyres.

While having a freer-flowing and raspier dual-tailpipe sports exhaust system with an internal flap that opens up when Sport-mode gets selected, it also dons new external parts that redirects air more effectively to provide cooling and aerodynamic functions - give the Countryman a drag coefficient of 0.34Cd.

Inside, there's a model-specific cockpit with a John Cooper Works sports seats that allows access to the MINI Driving Modes (Sport, MID and Green), LED headlamps, keyless entry and push-start button, 6.5-inch screen for the MINI Connected infotainment system and...Launch Control.
