CYBERJAYA: Ford Malaysia recently organised a one-day "Ford EcoBoost Track Day Experience" for media members, to demonstrate the power and performance of the American marque's EcoBoost engine technology.

A total of 10 Ford cars with turbocharged EcoBoost engines were prepared for the event including the 1.0-litre Fiesta compact car, 1.6-litre Fiesta ST, 1.5-litre Focus and 2.0-litre Mondeo sedans, 2.0-litre S-Max seven-seater MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), and 1.5-litre Kuga SUV (sport utility vehicle).

EcoBoost is Ford’s innovative engine downsizing strategy, which offers improved performance versus larger conventional engines.

You get more power, lower emissions and better fuel economy with smaller displacement engines.

Three critical technologies are in every EcoBoost engine – turbocharging, direct injection, and variable valve timing.

Combine these technologies with Ford software control algorithms, and the result is an exhilarating drive and class-leading fuel economy.

The EcoBoost Track Day Experience started with a 93km drive from DPulze shopping mall in Cyberjaya to Port Dickson, in a "RM20 Dare" where participants were challenged to use only RM20 (or less) worth of fuel on the journey.

In the afternoon, participants drove to the Putrajaya Recreational Airstrip where the S-Max, Kuga and Mondeo were put through 0 to 100kph sprints and steer-brake-and-avoid sessions on a 300-metre stretch.

This was to showcase the performance of the EcoBoost engines, and highlight the cars' safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

There was also a Precision Driving session, where participants took the sporty Fiesta and fun-to-drive Focus around a challenging autocross course to experience the handling and stability of the vehicles.

The day climaxed fittingly with a pleasant surprise, in the form of an "EcoBoost Unboxing" activity where a large 18x6 feet box was dismantled to reveal a Ford Mustang equipped with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivering 317ps and 432Nm of torque.

Participants then went for thrilling drift rides in the iconic American muscle car, controlled by a professional driver around the autocross course.
