UMW Toyota Motors investing RM2bil in plant for EEVs

KUALA LUMPUR : UMW Toyota Motors Sdn Bhd is investing RM2bil for the construction of a new assembly and manufacturing plant in Klang which is set to commence operations in 2019.

The new plant which encompasses 670,000 square metres will be situated in Bukit Raja, Klang. It will have an initial production volume of 50,000 vehicles and will primarily be focused on passenger cars and energy efficient vehicles (EEVs).

Combined, the new plant and the group's existing plant in Shah Alam will have a total production capacity of between 90,000 and 100,000 vehicles per annum.

Financing for the new venture will come from internally generated funds, confirmed UMW Toyota president Datuk Ismet Suki (pic).

According to UMW Toyota Motor deputy chairman Akio Takeyama, construction for the plant will begin during the second half of this year, while manufacturing operations is set to commence by early 2019.

"The new plant will allow the Toyota Group to enhance efficiency and cost competitiveness. This is a big leap forward for us as this represents the biggest investment made by the Toyota-UMW joint venture in Malaysia," he said.
