KUALA LUMPUR: Mitsubishi's latest Triton rollout packs a lighter, more powerful and fuel efficient engine.

The launch on Monday highlighted the fact that the new 2.4-litre MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic control system) turbodiesel unit with VGT (variable geometry turbo) intercooler has replaced the 2.5-litre mill used previously.

The Triton line-up, now expanded to six variants, is also notable for being the first pick-up in Malaysia to have variable valve timing technology and an aluminum alloy engine that results in a 30kg-lighter engine without compromising reliability and robustness. Before this, variable valve timing was confined to petrol engines.

To recap, the Triton output has been boosted to 181ps at 3,500rpm (previously 178ps at 4,000rpm) and 430Nm of torque at 2,500rpm (previously 400Nm at 2,000rpm), while fuel consumption is lower by up to 15%.

It's also a more refined truck this round as Mitsubishi said noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) have been reduced further.

The new Triton VGT Adventure X 4X4 variant is the flagship, and comes standard with a shield extender for the front bumper, a new sports bar with fullbox, and dual-tone 17-inch alloy wheels. Automatic bi-xenon HID Headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights and rear fog lamps are now available as standard on all VGT variants.

On the road prices without insurance for the new Triton are RM125,005 (VGT Adventure X); RM118,198 (VGT Adventure); RM109,446 (VGT 4x4 AT); RM102,619 (VGT 4x4 MT); RM88,997 (4x4 MT) and RM73,438 (Quest 4x2 MT).

Mitsubishi aims to sell 12,000 vehicles in its financial year ending March 2017. Driving sales would be the latest Triton, the new Outlander SUV and the ASX compact SUV.

Mitsubishi has been introducing innovative features to the local pick-up truck scene since 15 years ago. You may recall the L200 was the first local truck to get an automatic transmission back then. Mitsubishi went on to introduce a 3.2-litre engine in 2008. It followed up with the VGT technology in 2012, making it the first truck in town to use it.
