STUTTGART/PEBBLE BEACH: Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 at the Pebble Beach classic car show in California. The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance also saw a 1929 Mercedes-Benz won the top prize.

The two-seater Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is an electric car that was crafted as much for its epitome of futuristic luxury as it is a tribute to the "automotive haute couture" of hand-finished, exclusive cabriolets.

The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500km. The drive system has an output of 750hp. drive system, powered by a flat battery, allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0-100kph in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250kph)

The car has four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, making it an all-wheel drive.

The quick-charge function, based on the CCS standard, allows a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. So only five minutes of charging is required to gain an additional range of over 100km.

The radiator grille comprised fine, vertical struts, inspired by a pinstriped suit. It rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper.

The newly designed 24-inch light-alloy wheels feature a centre lock, painted in rose gold, reflecting the colour shade used on all electric vehicle studies from Mercedes-Benz.

The extended, round "boat tail" format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet's rear recalls a luxury yacht, and narrow tail lamps which emphasise the width of the vehicle are integrated in its outer edges. Other distinctive features at the rear include the diffuser with aluminum frame and the air outlets behind the wheel arches.

Yacht theme

At 6 metres in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet incorporates the classic proportions of art deco design with its long hood and flowing lines.

The cabin, designed like a yacht, has a light wing that flows in a curve across the door trim and the centre tunnel into the seat landscape, creating a 360° open-air luxury lounge.

The sitting area forms a horizontal plane that transitions into the vertical plane of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing.

Above the 360° luxury lounge, the display strip links doors, dashboard and the rear area. All display elements are integrated into the continuous glass trim part. Three air vents are positioned beneath the wing which appear to float like plane engines.

The floating, transparent centre tunnel, visualises the drive system's electrical energy flow for the passengers by means of blue fibre optics.

The main driving functions as well as information relevant to the location (e.g. restaurant recommendations or information on points of interest) are shown on the windscreen via two head-up displays.

The car has touch control and intelligent navigation linked to the appointment calendar, as part of the Concierge function. With luxury car makers promoting the "wellness" features in their production cars, Mercedes-Benz is repeating that theme in the concept car as well. The latest generation of biometric sensors record the state of mind and health status of the passengers.

The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance saw a 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer scooped the top award.

The sporting tourer, owned by collector Bruce R. McCaw of Bellevue, Wash., was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers' Club.

The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards. The rich blue colour was inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.

The prestigious classic car show, held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, drew 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states—and the total included 54 first-time entrants.

This year's event also raised more than US$1.6 million to help the needy.

Celebrity guests in attendance included Jay Leno, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Strahan, Jerry Seinfeld, and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar John Lasseter.
