What to do if you lose your driver's licence while driving in Europe

BERLIN: If your driver's licence gets lost or stolen while you are abroad, it is wise to immediately report it to local police.

Showing a police report for a missing licence can sometimes save drivers from having to pay a fine for driving without a licence if they are stopped by police, according to Germany's largest automobile club, the ADAC.

Graduated Driver licence

In Austria, the fine for driving without licence is 36 euros (RM180), while in Italy it is 86 euros (RM430), and in Germany 10 euros (RM50).

There is no criminal charge for driving without a licence, since the permit itself remains on record even if the document has been lost.

However, neither the police abroad nor an embassy or consulate can issue a new or replacement driver's licence. Drivers must apply for a new document at the motor vehicle authority in their home country.
