When a Nissan GT-R engine finds its way into a Toyota 86 - VIDEO

BRISBANE: What happens when you dump a twin turbo Nissan R35 GT-R motor into a mild-mannered Toyota 86?

Australian tuner StreetFX went ahead and did just that, using a 2012 86 as the base. The StreetFX guys hooked up with GT-R specialist shop GT Auto Garage to make the build possible.

Out went the Toyota’s 2.0-litre boxer engine and in went the GT-R’s 3.8-litre biturbo in what is apparently the first time such a ballsy thing is done. The 86 also gets a HKS’ 4.1-litre stroker upgrade and GT1000 symmetrical turbine kit.

The gearbox was replaced and upgraded to a 6-speed sequential to handle the huge power and paddle shifters were added to the car for rapid shifting. A new multi-plate clutch was also fitted to suit the sequential box and power requirements.

The ultimate goal of this car is a combination of circuit time attack, street use and roll racing. Not being built for one specific purpose will mean there are sacrifices for every category, but given the level of engineering and thought that has gone into this build, with a power goal exceeding 1000hp on Martini Racing E85 – it should comfortably be able to be used for a bit of everything.

The muscled-up 86 remains a work in progress and after the initial technical difficulties, is now shaping up nicely after several years of work. The Nissan engine looks fantastic in the 86 bay, and we can imagine the sound will be delightful.

The car will retain a full interior albeit with a roll cage, stereo, dashboard, and we are even planning on retaining air conditioning (by use of an electric compressor from RenCool, since there is no room for a belt driven unit with the dry sump pump taking the place of the alternator).

Power will be fed to the rear wheels via a 8.8 inch Ford Mustang differential, driveshaft axles running Porsche style constant velocity joints, and 5×114.3 hubs.
