Will a BMW pick-up truck look like this?

PETALING JAYA: Will BMW follow Mercedes-Benz in coming up with a posh pick-up truck?

Maybe. Maybe not. Until we see a BMW test mule that looks like a pick-up, everything's up in the air. But BMW is watching how the Mercedes X-Class truck, slated to go on sale later this year, pans out. If it sells well, BMW might be drawn by the smell of money to jump on the bandwagon as well.

Still, it hasn't stop some creative types from conjuring up an unofficial BMW pick-up.

The rendering above, based on an X5, comes from indianautosblog which posted it up about two weeks ago. It's just for fun and the actual pick-up, if it ever sees the light of day, will likely look very different.

BMW might look to the Toyota Hilux to do a pick-up truck. It's a big if at this point in time.

While the Mercedes X-Class is based on the Nissan Navara, BMW could choose to borrow the Toyota Hilux to speed up development and introduction of its own pick-up. After all, it is already working closely with Toyota on the next successor to the Z4/Supra. It makes sense to extend this alliance to a pick-up if BMW signs off on it.

BMW has done special one-off projects on pick-ups based on the E30 and E92 M3 before, so it's a question of dollars and cents whether it wants to go full throttle with a production series pick-up.

What do you think the BMW pick-up should be called? T5 perhaps?
