KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman who is believed to have been driving the Myvi which crashed into and killed a family of three along the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) on Saturday.
Police are now on the hunt for another Myvi, who eyewitnesses said was racing with four others, during the 1.05am incident which also left two young girls orphaned.
Kuala Lumpur staff officer for Traffic Investigation and Regulation Deputy Supt Markandan Subramaniam said the woman was arrested while she was seeking treatment for a bruised lip at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).
"She was driving the Myvi which hit the victims' Mitsubishi Pajero. We have also identified the driver of the other Myvi which crashed into the victims' car before it spun around," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the suspects were racing with four other Myvis before the accident, though representatives of the "Myvi club" of which the suspects belong to denied the claim.
The driver of the second Myvi which crashed into the victims and the other racers fled the scene.
Fairuz Nizam Husain, 35, his wife Nova Safitri Azhari, 27 and their seven-month old daughter Nur Firuza Annisa were all thrown from their vehicle as it spun on the highway.
Fairuz Nizam was killed at the scene while Nova Safitri and Nur Firuza died at HKL.
The three of them were reportedly returning home from a wedding reception in Putrajaya.
The couple has two other daughters, Nur Firuza Amira, 7, and Nur Firuza Akila, 3.
