1,000hp out of a Toyota Supra?

LOS ANGELES: If there's anyone who can squeeze 1,000hp out of the BMW B58 turbocharged I6 engine, then Stephan Papadakis of the Papadakis Racing outfit certainly comes close.

While retaining the stock engine, everything else inside this Toyota Supra mill have been replaced - from its pistons and connecting rods to its turbocharger and electronics. The upgrade included using forged pistons and aerospace-grade electronics.

Towards the end of the video, Papadakis puts the car on a dyno and was able to get a reading of 750hp at the wheel. It's all very impressive.

Papadakis Racing is a sport-performance team based in Carson, California, near here. Founded by Papadakis, the operation has built a reputation for performance and reliability that is backed by many motorsport records and championships.

You will recall that the Supra was built in collaboration with BMW for economies of scale, sharing chassis and other components with the new Z4 roadster.

Though they share the underlying hardware, both car makers say their cars drive differently from each other. Unlike the Z4 roadster with a retractable soft-top, the Supra is only sold as a coupe.

Both cars share a turbocharged inline four- and six-cylinder engines.

They are produced by contract assembler Magna Steyr at its plant in Graz, Austria.
