WOLFSBURG: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) presented the all-electric e-BULLI that's been equipped with the brand's latest electric drive components.

The concept vehicle is based on a restored T1 Samba Bus produced in 1966 and was to have its world premiere during the 2020 Techno Classica which has been postponed.

The German carmaker says that it will be available for purchase thanks to the efforts of VWCV and electric car conversion specialist eClassics.

The e-Bulli will be available as a complete vehicle or as a T1, T2 and T3 conversion with prices starting from 64,900 euros (RM308,000) and will come included with redesigned front and rear axles.

The original 44PS / 102Nm four-cylinder boxer engine mounted in the back gave way to an 83PS / 212Nm electric motor that's mated to a single-speed gearbox.

The automatic transmission's selector lever has the usual P, R, N, D as well as a new B position that allows the driver to vary the degree of energy recuperation during braking.

For performance, the e-Bulli is able to reach an electronically limited top speed of 130kph.

Powering the electric motor is a 45kWh lithium-ion battery that's been mounted into the floor and is said to capable of providing over 200km of range.

The chassis has been redesigned with front multi-link and rear adjustable shock absorbers with coil-over struts as well as a new rack-and-pinion steering system and four internally ventilated disc brakes.

The exterior features a two-tone paintwork finish in ‘Energetic Orange Metallic’ and ‘Golden Sand Metallic MATTE’ before equipping it with new round LED headlamps with daytime running lights and LED charge indicators.

Inside, the upholstery of the eight-seat takes on a two-tone combination of Saint Tropez and Saffrano Orange.

Positioned within a console between the driver and front passenger seat is the new automatic transmission selector lever that's been integrated with a start/stop button for the electric motor.

Solid wood in the look of a ship’s deck is used for the floor throughout for a maritime feel and is lies beneath a large panoramic folding roof.

The new speedometer is based on the original, while an integrated two-digit display bridges the gap into the modern era.

The display provides the driver with information that includes range whether the parking brake is activated or if the charging connector is plugged in.

More information can be viewed on the tablet that's been integrated into the roof console and even has Volkswagen's "We Connect" which allows the driver to view online information via a smartphone app or a PC.

A corresponding web portal is able to provide other information pertaining to remaining charge time, current range, kilometres travelled, trip times as well as energy consumption and recuperation.

Music onboard comes from an authentic-looking retro-style radio that's been fitted with a subwoofer, DAB+, Bluetooth and USB.
