SHAH ALAM: Tata Motors, exclusively distributed by DRB-Hicom Commercial Vehicles Sdn Bhd (DHCV), has re-entered the Malaysian market with the introduction of the Xenon pickup truck and the Prima Prime Mover.

With the unveiling of the Xenon, its official launch was indicated to be in March with an unconfirmed price range of RM60,000 to RM80,000, while being offered in three colours of white, black and silver.

The Xenon is currently being produced in Thailand and looks to appeal to those seeking a medium-sized workhorse for both commercial and individual applications.

The Xenon comprises of six variants, starting with the entry-level single cab (4x2 or 4x4), the mid-range space cab (4x2 only) and the double cab pickup truck (4x2 - Standard, 4x4 - Basic and 4x4 Premium).

The pickup truck was showcased in both 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains with a five-speed manual transmission mated to a 2.2L Direct Injection turbo-diesel engine producing 138bhp at 4,000rpm and 320Nm of torque from 1,700 to 2,700rpm.

The Xenon in single or space cab form features a drop-side load body to allow for easier cargo loading/unloading and all variants will be able to accept a payload of up to 1.2 tonnes.

In addition, Tata also launched its Prima prime mover trucks in two variants – the 4x2 Prima 4038.S (RM270,000) and 6x4 Prima 4938.S (RM320,000).

Previously, DRB-Hicom assembled, distributed and sold Tata's commercial vehicles in Malaysia via 70% owned Scott & English (M) Sdn Bhd, before the agreement lapsed in 2008.

In 2012, DRB-Hicom also signed a cooperation agreement to develop, promote and market Tata's military vehicles.

The project to revive the brand in Malaysia started in September 2013, upon the signing of the Importation, Distribution and Technology License Agreements between Tata Motors and DHCV.
