SAN FRANCISCO: Tech giant Apple sparked new rumours about its car plans with the hiring of Tesla's former top electric powertrains specialist.
Michael Schwekutsch (pic) was until recently the vice president of engineering at Elon Musk's electric car company, responsible for the development of powertrains and battery packs. He's now working for Apple's special projects group, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Apple's car project, which according to media reports is under the code name Titan, has already gone through several phases. The company first drafted prototypes of its own electric vehicles, before the emphasis was placed on developing systems for autonomous driving.
The company is already testing self-driving Lexus SUVs in Silicon Valley, though it raised doubts recently by cutting dozens of jobs in the sector. The test drives, however, have since continued.
