April vehicle sales down 8.8% from March

KUALA LUMPUR: Total industry vehicle (TIV) sales in April fell by 8.8% to 49,964 units from March, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said.

The trade body said on Friday the decline in April sales compared with those of March were due to the rush for deliveries by companies which had their financial year ending on March 31, 2019.

“Consumers were also adopting a wait-and-see attitude, that is waiting for the Hari Raya festive season promotions,” it said.

However, when compared with a year ago, April vehicle sales rose by 6.2% from 47,047 units.

Vehicles sold in April comprised of 45,334 passenger vehicles and the remaining 4,630 were commercial vehicles.

Year-to-date, the TIV sales rose by 5.9% to 193,028 units from 182,157 units in the previous corresponding period.

The MAA data aso showed production picked up in April, rising to 52,806 units of which 48,877 were passenger vehicles and the remainng 3,209 were commercial vehicles.

However, MAA was upbeat on the outlook for May as it expected higher sales compared with April due to the festive season promotional campaigns.
