Audi A5 Sportback gets ready for Paris

INGOLSTADT: Audi is intent on showcasing its second generation A5 Sportback at this year's Paris Motor Show with its tighter wrought lines, new platform, host of driver assistance and infotainment systems as well as the latest engine, transmission and quattro drive.

The car is now lighter by 85kg and have five engine options (two 2.0 TFSI and three 2.0 TDI powerplants) for choice with up to 17% increase in power ratings, which ranges from 190PS to 286PS, while fuel consumption gets reduced by as much as 22%.



It comes with the usual Audi slap that includes Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear cluster lights, a three-spoke leather multi-function steering wheel with paddle shifters (for automatic transmission) and LED interior lighting to name a few.

With a wheelbase of 2,824mm, the front axle features a redesigned five-link suspension, while a five-link construction replaces the previous trapezoidal-link rear suspension.

The optional adaptive dampers are integrated into the standard Audi drive select dynamic handling system.

The new electromechanical power steering has been further improved for better road feedback and steering precision

As standard, the A5 Sportback is fitted with 17-inch forged lightweight wheels, with a wide range of options available up to 19 inches in size. All tyres have been optimised for rolling resistance, which reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 2.8 grams per km.

The new quattro with ultra technology is available for the TFSI and TDI four-cylinder engines with manual transmission and does not perceptibly differ from permanent systems in terms of traction and driving dynamics.

At slow speeds, the A5 putters about with power sent to the front-wheels and only when more traction is needed with the all-wheel drive system get activated.

Inside, the cabin has grown longer by 17mm, wider by 11mm - all which translating to 24mm more knee room to add to the spaciousness which gets packed with a 19-speaker 755W Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound that's managed by an 8.3-inch monitor.

Also, there's MMI navigation plus with MMI touch, 10GB flash storage, DVD drive, three-year free Audi connect services, up to five free navigation updates, Audi smartphone interface with specific iOS and Android integration in the MMI.

There's also Audi's phone box, which connects smartphones to the on-board antenna for better reception quality as well wireless charging for smartphones using the Qi standard.

The boot contains 480-litres of space that's expandable to 1,300 litres with the 40:20:40 rear seat folded down and the powered tailgate has the option of adding a sensor for hands-free opening and closing operation.

For convenience, there's adaptive cruise control (ACC), Stop&Go system with traffic jam assist up to 64kph, which assumes the tasks of braking and accelerating the car as well as steering on well marked roads.

 

It will also come with a unique predictive efficiency assistant, which evaluates GPS information from the car’s immediate surroundings to help save fuel by giving specific driving advice.

For safety, there's collision avoidance assist, which will intervene and help the car drive around an obstacle to avoid an accident - the camera, ACC and radar sensors collaborate to compute a recommended driving line within a fraction of a second.
