Audi's functions-on-demand programme lets drivers keep their options open

INGOLSTADT: Audi is rolling out a functions-on-demand programme that will enable customers to instantly upgrade their cars with additional lighting, driver assistance and infotainment functions for defined periods at any point during their ownership.

The e-tron electric SUV will be the first vehicle to benefit from the over-the-air update, with more models to follow.

The new service will offer Audi drivers greater flexibility by enabling them to add an array of upgrades in areas including lighting, driver assistance and, in the longer term, infotainment retrospectively and for specific periods such as business trips or holidays.

Customers can activate additional functions online any time after delivery via myAudi app and myAudi web portal.

The hardware for the features available as part of the functions-on-demand programme is installed in all vehicles at the factory, and is available throughout their life cycle, but each component is only "switched on" when customers either specify it at the point of order or pay to use it for a defined period at any point during their ownership.

The preferred period can be selected via the myAudi app or the myAudi web portal, which can also process bookings and payments. As soon as a transaction is completed a signed data package is generated and transmitted to the car via the mobile network, meaning the chosen function is available to the driver the next time the car is started.

Customers have a choice to try out a feature for a month at a nominal cost before committing, and they can then either choose to extend their usage of the function or leave their booking to expire automatically without any further input needed on their part.

The booked functions always apply to the car rather than to the customer, meaning that when the car is sold they remain active for the full term that has been booked and can be used by the next owner. In addition, the next owner can choose to book further functions later on to suit their needs.

The type and extent of options offered as part of the programme will depend on the model. In the first phase for the e-tron SUV they include the possibility to add a lighting package which upgrades the standard LED headlights to Matrix LED specification and a park assist system to make lighter work of parking manoeuvres.

When the Matrix LED function is activated individual segmented diodes in the high beam setting automatically dim or deactivate to give maximum illumination without dazzling leading or oncoming traffic. The driver can simply leave the system to adapt to its surroundings. Dynamic indicators, which "sweep" in the direction of intended travel, are also part of the package.

By specifying park assist, the driver can fully relinquish control of the steering when parking – the system can automatically guide the e-tron into parallel spaces and bays, leaving only the simpler tasks of accelerating, braking and changing gear as required. More functions will follow in subsequent stages of the programme.
