Avoid using retreaded tyres, say police

PETALING JAYA: The use of retread tyres is seen as highly risky in causing accidents on the highways, said Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus.

He said the use of retreaded tyres was not recommended because it might easily be detached compared to the original tyres, and that it would put other road users at risk.

"We (the police) are looking at this seriously because retreaded tyres easily detach and will result in serious accidents. Summonses can be issued to those using these retreaded tyres. "In addition, the lorries carrying woods must also ensure the loads are sealed to avoid from falling off onto the road and endangering other users," he told reporters when met during an integrated operation at the Sungai Buloh Lay-by (Southbound) at KM 453.8 of the North-South Expressway, near here, on Saturday.

He said heavy vehicles were prone to using retreaded tyres due to its cheaper price compared to original tyres.
"The treads of these tyres will not last long. It will detach and endanger road users such as motorcyclists," he said.
