FRANKFURT: The Mercedes powerhouse subsidiary AMG has been looking at ways to cram as much racetrack performance into one car without losing the road permit.

Using many features from racing sports and 730-horsepower engine, its newest street-legal racecar would feel comfortable on the race track.

AMG has now announced plans to launch its GT as a Black Series version in future. With know-how from the world of racing, excessive amounts of more power and an eye-catching design, this Coupe is now the most ambitious model in the AMG range, the manufacturer says.

Prices for the car are to be announced in the coming weeks, and the car is to be available at dealerships in Europe before the end of this year.

At its heart is a reworked V8 engine, which now generates 730hp from 4.0 litres of displacement, making it the most powerful eight-cylinder in AMG history.

It needs just 3.2 seconds to race from standstill to 100kph and can reach a top speed of 325kph. Of course, all this makes for one thirsty car, and Mercedes says fuel consumption averages 12.8 litres per 100km.

In order to make all this muscle safe for city streets, Mercedes has revised not only the chassis but also the aerodynamics. There are lowered sills and spoilers, an almost completely covered underbody, so-called splitters at the front, as well as a massive diffuser and a two-level spoiler including an electrically controlled tear-off edge.

Since all this car's muscle-flexing will heat things up under the bonnet, the Black Series has a larger grille to keep things cool, as well as large air intakes at the front.

Large parts of the exterior are also made in lightweight carbon. A lighter construction is also a feature on the inside, where the cockpit is notably scaled back, compared to many other Mercedes cars with tight-fitting bucket seats, thin doors and a slimmed-down dashboard.

A roll cage, four-point seat belts and a fire extinguisher on board are also available on request for buyers who want to use it for the intended purpose of racing.
