KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Auto Alliance Sdn Bhd (BAASB) has been officially awarded the sole distributor rights to the Peugeot brand in Malaysia.

The new company is a joint venture between Berjaya Corp Bhd (51%), current Mazda distributor Bermaz Auto Bhd (20%) and Groupe PSA (29%).

Groupe PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) is a French auto manufacturing conglomerate for brands such as Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel and Vauxhall.

The new partnership will allow Groupe PSA to pursue its growth here in Malaysia after having made Malaysia its export hub for the region.

BAASB will also be taking over aftersales and spare parts distribution for Peugeot, Citroen and DS brands. There was no mention of distributor rights to Citroen and DS.

With regards to KIA, the South Korean car brand still stands in the wind and whether or not the newly minted company will take over distributorship responsibilities remains in question.

Also yet to be announced is the fate of Naza Automotive Manufacturing Sdn Bhd's (NAM) automotive assembly plant in Gurun which is also up for disposal.

The plant was set up in 2004 which assembles Peugeot, Citroen and Kia vehicles and has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units.

NAZA Group recently announced that it was relinquishing its rights to distribute Peugeot, Citroen and DS marques as well as KIA. Bermaz Auto was said to be interested in taking over the brands.
