BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe prototype dons QR-coded camouflage

MUNICH: BMW is trying something different for a change when it comes to its camouflaged cars under development.

Its BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is draped in an eye-catching multi-coloured camouflage that includes a large QR code on the front doors directing curious eyes to www.bmw.com/2-series-gran-coupe. The site offers early information on the first four-door coupe in the premium compact segment.

BMW engineers are putting the finishing touches to the car as it undergoes calibration drives around the Munich area.

The new model will make its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November before its worldwide market launch in spring 2020.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is a spin-off from the classical sedan format. It is front-wheel-driven and shares an array of technological developments with the recently unveiled 1 Series.

One feature of the new car’s technical armoury is the ARB (near-actuator wheel slip limitation) technology featured in the BMW i3s

ARB uses a slip controller positioned directly in the engine control unit rather than in the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system. Eliminating long signal paths means that information is relayed three times quicker, while the driver perceives wheel slip being brought under control up to 10 times faster.

BMW said this traction control technology teams up with the standard BMW Performance Control to deliver a direct and intense driving experience with both front-wheel drive and the xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive of the M235i xDrive.

The sporty range-topping model is fitted with the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the BMW Group line-up, producing 306hp. It also comes as standard with the newly developed mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, which gives the car an even sportier edge by creating a locking effect between the front wheels.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is said to have a generous cabin space and modern connectivity features.

BMW said the global model is targeted at "design-led customers in urban areas" who enjoy driving. It would also be sold as an appealing addition to the model line-up, particularly in markets where the sedan body style enjoys strong popularity.
